Combat Combo Guide — Master Advanced Fighting Techniques

The difference between a good Dan the Man player and a great one is not stats or gear — it is combo knowledge. Advanced combat techniques multiply your damage output, improve your survivability, and unlock playstyles that casual players never experience. This guide covers the technical side of Dan the Man combat.

Basic Combo Theory

Every attack in Dan the Man has three properties: startup frames (the animation before the hit connects), active frames (when the hit can damage enemies), and recovery frames (the animation after the hit before you can act again). The key to combos is canceling recovery frames into the startup of your next move.

The simplest cancel: after a punch connects, input a kick immediately to skip the punch's recovery animation. The kick starts up faster than the punch's recovery would take. This punch-into-kick sequence is the foundation that all advanced combos build upon.

Dan's Bread and Butter Combos

Bread and Butter (B&B)

Jab → Cross → Uppercut → Jump Kick. This four-hit sequence works on virtually every non-boss enemy and deals reliable damage. The timing is generous — after each hit, input the next attack as the previous hit connects (not after the full animation). The Jump Kick at the end provides safe disengagement if other enemies are approaching.

Wall Carry Combo

Jab → Cross → Uppercut → Dash Forward → Jab → Cross → Front Kick. This sequence carries an enemy across the screen toward a wall. The Front Kick at the end launches them into the wall for bonus damage. Use this to isolate enemies from groups and to set up wall-splat combos.

Boss Punish Combo

Charged Punch → Uppercut → Jump Kick → Land → Special Move. This is your maximum damage window during a boss's recovery. The Charged Punch starts because it deals the most single-hit damage, the Uppercut and Jump Kick keep the boss in hitstun, and the Special Move provides a massive finisher. This entire sequence can deal 15-20% of a boss's health bar in one go.

Animation Canceling

The jump cancel is Dan the Man's most important advanced technique. Input a jump immediately after certain attacks connect (Uppercut, Front Kick, Roundhouse) to cancel the recovery animation. This lets you follow up with aerial attacks that would otherwise be impossible. Master the jump cancel and the entire combo system opens up.

Josie's Advanced Combo Routes

Josie's speed opens routes that other characters cannot access. Her signature technique is the Flip Kick Loop: Flip Kick → Quick Jab (during Flip Kick recovery) → Flip Kick → Quick Jab → Flip Kick. With perfect timing, Josie can chain Flip Kicks and Quick Jabs indefinitely, creating a blender of hitboxes around her that no enemy can escape. The timing is frame-tight but learnable with practice.

Josie's Wall Jump enables aerial cross-ups: Wall Jump off a nearby wall → aerial attack → land behind the enemy → Quick Jab combo from the back. Enemy AI struggles to track Josie through this sequence, giving you free damage.

Barry's Devastating Combo Path

Barry combos are short but brutally effective: Shoulder Charge → Cancel into Body Slam → Power Stomp → Heavy Punch. The Shoulder Charge closes distance, the Body Slam catches the enemy as they recover from the charge's knockback, the Power Stomp launches them, and the Heavy Punch catches them as they land. Four hits, but enough damage to kill most regular enemies outright.

Universal Combo Principles

  • Stagger management: Each hit in a combo adds stagger duration to the enemy. Your goal is to land the next hit before the stagger wears off. If an enemy recovers between your hits, your combo is not true — shorten your sequence or improve your timing.
  • Positional awareness: Combos push enemies in the direction of your attacks. Always be aware of where the enemy will end up after your combo. Pushing an enemy into a corner extends your combo options. Pushing them into another enemy can hit both with one attack.
  • Combo selection by enemy type: Light combos for grunts, wall-carry combos for isolation, boss-punish combos for damage windows. Do not autopilot one combo — adapt to the situation.
  • Drop combos to survive: If you see a dangerous attack coming from off-screen, drop your combo and dodge. A dropped combo costs you a few seconds. Taking a hit costs you health that you cannot get back.
Practice Makes Permanent

Practice these combos in early stages where enemies are slow and non-threatening. Bad habits formed under pressure are hard to break. Build muscle memory in a low-stress environment, then apply it under real combat conditions.
